Some of the onions I planted (tiny plants not sets) have grown into nice onions but a few have only grown into small white onions and I noticed yesterday they had a pointy flower head type thing come up.  I broke it off, hoping the onion would get bigger, any thoughts?  I think that in the back of my mind there is something about onion flowers being male or female? Shall I just pull up the onions which are only the size of a large pickled onion!

Onions are unisex, the ones with flowers have 'bolted'. They will probably grow bigger, but not store. Use these first after harvest.
