Beginners Question - Growing Runner Beans
« on: December 09, 2008, 13:27 »
Hello all.

I am new to allotments - we only got ours this year.  Quite a lot of the people on our site have some yellow plastic sheeting that they put all round their runner beans to keep the pigeons off.  They have actually formed "loops" in the plastic and the bamboo poles are pushed through these.  They seem to work very well but no one on the site knows where they got the plastic from.  It seems they have been around for a while.

Do any of you guys out there know what I am talking about?  Do you know where I might get some?

Many thanks,

That's a brand new one on me also.

We have a heavy infestation  of wood pigeons and have to net just about everything.

Runner beans is not one of them though.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Quite - mine attracted no interest at all from the pigeons either feral or racing that inhabit the allotment area.

This yellow sheeting sounds a bit like anti-elephant powder!

(If you don't know about it - ask!).

I'm clueless

One question ? are these up now and protecting plants ?? It's possible they use them to protect them from the worst of the weather so they can use the same plants again, they are a tender perennial after all.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Please take no offence at this question. Are these runner beans we are talking about or broad beans?

Broad beans are just coming through now and are often pulled up by crows or pheasants. Pidgeons sometimes get the blame.
