Lost my last 2 girls today.
« on: June 16, 2011, 20:16 »
Jessie was taken from inside the run, Miss Red, my little treasure who would just wander in and make herself at home, was taken from right outside the kitchen door.
I was drinking some water at the sink, I saw her outside the kitchen door, I put the mug down and by the time I had got to the back door, about 5 seconds, she had been carried off. I found her caught up in the wire fencing, half in and half out of the garden, decapitated.
We will not be getting any more for a while now. Im just a bit sad tonight!

I am so very, very sorry for your terrible loss.  You must be so heartbroken.  If I could I'd give you a hug and a pat on the back.   :(
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

What bold foxes you have Mary.  Don't blame you for deciding to not get any more girls for now as you must be really upset about it all .  You have had rotten luck :(

Hope your little goats are well and can cheer you up today :)

Thanks everyone, you are the BEST! New Shoot, you are so right. My lovely little boys are a real source of great joy to me. I just adore them to bits! They loved the chooks too though, they all got on so well, the chooks were always poking their heads through the fence of the goat run to get a better look!

Glad your boys are doing well Mary  :D  `

We had a very young, thin and obviously desparate fox in the garden around 6.00pm the other night.  All my lot were in runs so were safe but he caused panic and we had quite a few with blooming beaks and combs having run into wire  :(

Calmed them with mealworms and got the purple spray out.  The look like they are going to a goth convention now, but I was very relieved when everyone emerged the next morning fit and well.  1 of my girls is 8 now and a fright like that could have done for her overnight.

It's a side of chicken keeping you have to be ready for, but I don't find it easy either  :(  I will hold my hands up to being a complete softie with spoilt rotten chickens  ;)  :)

Its so awful. I really. miss my girlies so much. The worst time is in the kitchen when I have a little bit of something left over and I think to myself"oh Miss Red will have that " Then I realise she's not around. Then when I went shopping today, I had to buy eggs. I really hate having to buy them.
As soon as OH is well enough, he has promised to get the new house and run finished asap. It cant come soon enough for me, but I cant hurry his recovery, as that would be asking for trouble with his lungs!
No more will our chooks be easy meat for the foxes. If they try to break our defences, they will do so at their peril. I have spake forth!!!!!
(Glad your girls lived to tell the tale New shoot!)
