Title: A rush job...
Post by: mickwood on April 09, 2009, 22:49
OK, so a few days ago I got told I have a new allotment and so off I went, bought some gardening books (I'm as new as a newbie can be!!) and spent a few days clearing as much as possible from the plot.

I'm keen as mustard to start things growing as as I've now cleaned and dug over an area approx 4m x 5m, which will hopefully be extended to 4m x 7m and provide me with 3 beds 4m x 2m. The only problem is.....I'm flying off to Peru on Wed!!!

So...with little knowledge I've made the following plan/purchases

Garlic Sultrop (Spring planters)
Onion Sturon sets
Onion red baron sets
king edwards potatoes
Red Duke of York potatoes
Sutton Broad Beans
Dwarf French Beans
Peas (Peawee 65)

The plan is to sow them all in the next few days into the 3 beds then, and this is the dodgy bit I think, leave the beds for 3 weeks while I'm backpacking around Peru!! Is this an obviously daft idea??? My choices are fairly limited as it's a case of getting something planted or leave it 3 weeks but I think that's leaving things too late??

Any advice very much welcomed!!  :D

I'd try to get the onions and spuds in before you go.

Broad beans if you have time.

Peas can easily wait till afterwards.

Far too early to be sowing dwarf beans outside - risk of frost.

And enjoy your trip  :D

Edit: yes, Hindy's right, I forgot to say that garlic should go in asap too

Totally agree with Yorkie there.
I would try and get the garlic in before you go to.
Wish It were me going  :)

Agreed also - onions, potatoes, garlic & broad beans should easily look after themselves for 3 weeks until you get back.
Have a great trip!

Well we can hope!! I just hope I don't get back to a garden of weeds!!

I've covered a huge patch of grass with a tarp until I get back to dig it...hopefully it may begin to kill it??
