Raspberry canes
« on: January 25, 2009, 13:12 »
Hi all

I've been given a pot with 5 raspberry canes but I've never grown them before - so what is the best way to do it?

Do I need to dig a trench?
Obviously, I need a method of supporting the canes (wood frame and wire?)

Should I plant in a straight row?  If so, how far apart?

Thanks

Do you know if they are summer fruiting or Autumn fruiting? Planting is the same but I have never supported my Autumn plants.

A straight row usually works out best - easier access to both sides when picking. If they're summer fruiting, then supports are good as they'll get top heavy and flop onto the soil and spoil.

Hi Peanut

I planted mine in December following these guidelines from an RHS book.

After removing all perennial weeds plant about 18 inches apart in a hole 1 ft cubed filled with half-compost or manure plus half soil mix, plus a bit of general fertiliser like blood and bone. If you are planting more than one row, these should be spaced about 6 feet apart.

Autumn raspberries may not need support, but summer raspberries will need tying in to three wires at heights of approx 2 1/2 feet, 3 1/2 feet and  5 feet.
