New to allotments
« on: October 25, 2015, 19:12 »
Just managed to get a plot in a local allotment.  I have got 2 plots which need clearing up.  Can anyone suggest anything for my first planting.  There is a polytunnel on the site which we can use, so can put this to use.

Whilst its always a nice idea to get some things planted to keep your interest up - at this time of year your main efforts should be in getting the land cleared and ready for planting in Spring.

Having said that there are a fair few things that can go in now. I've just put in some overwintering (Japanese) onion sets, some shallots and (hopefully tomorrow) some garlic. I have grown winter hardy lettuce in my greenhouse in the past - it was nice to be able to serve up home grown lettuce in Jamuary... maybe that would be something you could do in the PT?
I always like to have something growing overwinter - it encourages me to get up to the plot - but quite a lot of stuff that you can overwinter needs to have gone in already.
I don't try to grow a massive amount over winter so someone with more experience might be along in a minute with some more helpful advice.

The main website has monthly growing advice:

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Sow Aquadulce broad bean in November to beat the blackfly invasion next Spring.
