Title: worms in eggs
Post by: rachelr on January 16, 2011, 16:40
Ok i am probably being paranoid but has anyone got pickies  or discussions or anything where hens eggs have actually got worms in them.

I regularly worm mine but am concerned that i notice the evidence before my customers point it out to me

Many thanks

Worm the hens regularly is all you can do. Put the worming dates on the calender and stick to them.
I have seen worms in eggs twice but accept they are more nauseating than dangerous . You can find them in many animal products and the worm eggs on vegetables but most people are better off not being reminded.

It would give Mr & Mrs Organic something to think about. ;)

It's very uncommon and one cannot actually tell until the egg has been cracked open.

The most likely worm to be found in a chicken's egg is a round worm of the family Ascaridia.  These are severil centimetres long and when present are found in the white of the egg.  They probably reach the egg via migration down into the lower gut and then into the oviduct via the vent.

It is uncommon and should not a problem if you worm regularly.
