Title: Hamburg Parsley
Post by: viettaclark on April 23, 2010, 17:54
My teenage son bought me some seed for Mothers' Day thinking it was parsnip. According to the packet it behaves exactly the same but the taste is like celeriac/salsify.
Has anyone grown it?

Yes, I grew it last year and ate some recently as it is Winter hardy. The root is shaped like a narrow cylinder, with much less eating than a parsnip. I thought that the root tasted rather like parsley, but it has a tougher texture than parsnip. Interesting but not stunning!

Some interesting comments here on that parsley:

Thanks folks. Not sure whether to try it as space is very limited. Might chuck it in the comfrey bed and see what happens.
Bought more parsnip seed today because I thought last year's seed I'd planted wouldn't germinate as it's been 4 weeks and lo and behold.....today, rows of little parsnips have popped up. Seed wasn't needed.....

My roots were about 20 cm long but still had limited eating due to their small diameter. They also seem to be susceptible to carrot root fly.
