Laurel is a favourite for adult vine weavil.  If it is them, there will be holes nibbled all round the leaf edges.

They are mainly nocturnal, so don't be surprised if you can't find them on the plant  :)

Can you do the old vine weevil trick?  place some sheets of newspaper under the bush first, wait until its dark, shine a bright torch all over the bush and with any luck they will drop off to avoid the light, gather up the newspaper and burn it.

Check any pots you have too as they prefer pots to open ground.  Non-edibles can be treated with Bayer vine weevil treatment.  For edibles the only alternative at the moment is nematodes (Nemasys) when the weather warms up (can you tell you're not alone in this?).  :)

Vine weevil. I thought it might have been  ants causing the damage.
I don't think I'll be able to save it there's not much of it left , but ill try the spray and the torch and paper trick when the weather improves. It's like the Artic outside brrrr .

That's Aucuba or spotted laurel, rather than true laurel, but the damage is vine weevil alright.

You can spray with Provado Ultimate Bug Killer which is systemic and enters the whole plant system making the plant poisonous to bugs.  Aucuba is tough - try treating, then feeding it once the weather warm up a bit.  it may surprise you  :)
