Hi,

Got to thin my carrot seedlings out.  Seems such a waste to get rid of the seedlings I’ll be taking out.  Does anyone replant the seedlings? Or is this a case of life’s too short?

I never thin my seedlings, the smell of the displaced carrots attracts carrot root fly.  Additionally it is another job I can avoid and it is a faff.  I try to avoid faff.  I do try and sow reasonably thinly but I find the carrots push themselves apart and get to a decent size however close they are.   
I don't think they'd transplant easily.

i thin mine when they are very young and have transplanted. sometimes they are multi fingered.
f you have the time and space what you got to loose.

Mine are under enviromesh too, but carrot fly around here are vicious.  I don't want to attract them to my carrot bed when the mesh is off for thinning, weeding or anything else if I can help it.

Snap, and neither do I, and currently the rows are jammed with carrots shoulder to shoulder in the ground... they just push each other apart enough to grow

I grow all my carrots in pots, Chantenay and Touchon.
Eat them as baby carrots late Summer through to late Winter, with sowings from March through to June.
I keep back a few pots and plant many of the thinnings in those.
Do find you have to be quick, as they dry out and wilt quickly. I water the pot before I sow the thinnings, so easy to plant and less stress.
Do cover the carrots, once sowed, but remove it after their tops are two inches or so high. Do not cober the thinnings.
Have the pots around the plot and never suffered from any carrot fly, think the pots help with that.

Carrot fly are only around in the day so if you thin or hoe carrots do it in the evening when they are asleep.

I thin mine when they are tiny just removing plants where they are in clumps. then, once they are big enough to eat, I thin out as I use them.
