Rose dilemma!!
« on: July 05, 2015, 23:08 »
We bought this lovely fragrant white tea rose - I think it was called 'Iceberg' - a few years ago.

Now, this year for the first time, it started sprouting quite long shoots - (now whether in previous years I chopped these off without thinking or whether this really is the first year the rose has done this) - but Ben said "I think your rose is trying to climb??

And loww and behold, I looked at it and thought - yes - it is trying to climb!!

So he moved it for me and put it next to an empty trellis on the fence.

Looked at it today (I was in a sniffing roses mood) and spotted the two VERY different blooms!!

Have 2 different roses been grafted onto each other at the garden centre?? I'm pretty sure this is not mother nature that's done this?? ?? ?? ??? ???

Looks like it is a sucker. Iceberg has two different parents Robin Hood and Virgo . It needs tracing down to where it joins stem below ground and cutting out. The rose will have been grafted onto a rootstock often a wild type rose and that picture does look more like that sort of rose. The sucker will come from the rootstock below the graft, often better to twist it off rather than cutting with secateurs. Does the sucker have leaves with seven leaflets?

I really don't know where it's springing from to be honest!

Yes, It's either a sucker or a sport (a chance mutation) either way - trace it back to it's origin and cut it out.

Do you think either rose will harm the other??

I would never have bought one of the climbing english-rose types but it seems to fit quite nicely in the garden :D

The one with the less petals will grow much more strongly than the Iceberg (you've noticed it doing that already) and eventually take over.

If you want the Iceberg to survive in the long-term - you have to remove the sucker/sport  :(

Bush roses are always 2 roses in one, the rootstock being from a wild rose to give the grafted one more vigour. The pink single rose is a flower belonging to the rootstock. Normally the rootstock doesn't throw up its own shoots but it sometimes does if the rootstock gets damaged. These suckers should be traced back to the rootstock by removing the soil to find the point of attachment and then pulling the sucker off from the root. If you cut them off at ground level they will just regrow.
