Saving Seed from Poppies
« on: July 05, 2015, 10:05 »
Hi All,
Growing wild at the edge of my plot is the most stunning Poppy, the flowers are beautiful.
I want to save some seed from this plant with the hope of growing them in my garden next year.
Ive never saved Poppy seed before so any advice would be great.

Its easy to save and you get loads Fatbelly  :)  They may not all come completely true to the original colour, but that depends on what other poppies are growing nearby.

Wait until the seed head has formed and then keep a really close eye on it.  You want to catch it as you can hear the seeds rattling around in there, but before the holes at the top open up enough to let it spill out.  Cut the whole seed head and put it straight into a bag.  As it finishes opening up, you can tip it up and thousands of tiny black seeds will come out.

FB ,generaly find they come true, if you are saving more than one colour get a fine tip black marker and write the colour on the pod. This also works on green pods so there can be no mix ups.

Sometimes I miss the little seed head and it pops too soon, so when I think it may be almost ready, I put a little paper bag on the head and tie it on to catch the seeds.

When we lived in Essex I had a lovely red and white heritage poppy, but when I sowed the saved seeds nothing came up.

We have a lovely lilac one out the front and I can't remember where it came from, but I'm hoping to catch some seeds from it too!
