Storing potatoes.
« on: November 03, 2011, 17:59 »

I'm having trouble storing potatoes from this year's harvest.

I've stored them (Charlottes) in the same way as before in a cool, reasonably dry garage but the are chitting badly. At this rate they won't be useable soon.

I was talking to a local farmer about this. He said that this was a real problem for the commercial growers this year. Its the white potatoes that won't keep, not the reds, and the cause is thought to be the weather patterns this year, culminating with the hot weather a few weeks ago.

Are other people having similar problems, or is it just in this part of Yorkshire?

I haven't dug all of mine up yet, and some are growing leaves. Never had that happen before.

Yup it's the weather, all you can do is keep them as cool as you can.

I completely dissagree, I keep charlotte potatoes in sacks and they last until march or april.  I've done this for at least the last 5 years!
