Hen not eating
« on: October 06, 2010, 19:05 »
Is there anything high energy I can syringe down my chicken's throat, as she is not eating at all?  Sugar solution or something similar.  The vet thinks she may have a virus and she is on anti-inflammatories for a couple of days to see if she can shake it off.

I think I need to take her back to the vet to be put to sleep, but won't mind one last ditch attempt.

Apart from not wanting to lose her, when she goes I will be down to one hen and the vet said it's not a good idea to get her a new mate for a while as she may have the virus too.

try grinding her layers pellets down and mix with warm water so that it is thin enough to syringe, you could add some avian vitamins (look in the pigeon section of your pet shop supplies) and perhaps a little honey to give her a little bit of energy. Hope she recovers - try getting some antibiotics although these can take over 5 days before they start to work as well as the anti inflammitories xx
Staffies are softer than you think.
