Grow Your Own / Re: Onions from seed?
« Last post by cc on Today at 16:30 »
I always grow from seed. It doesn't seem financially logical to grow from sets but so far dire. Hardly any seeds have come up. Growing in trays in greenhouse/conservatory.
Might be the seeds are passed it though. I do have some doing very well which I planted in the autumn. I must admit they are rarely large but on the other hand it's dirt cheap to grow from seed. Specially as I buy from premier seeds! Twice the amount for half the price!

I have plenty of the old ones left. I also use the beer traps the latter is very good but the old slug worked very very well.

Can't say I have problems with sweetcorn in pots. 1 failure out of 35 I assume you haven't got the space as pot grown is very successful.

Grow Your Own / Re: Trouble with rats
« Last post by cc on Today at 15:59 »
I eventually lost all my asparagus to mice they didn't eat them they just kept burrowing through the roots. I have traps everywhere for them. I will set up rat traps this year as I lost most of my sweetcorn one year to rats.
Neighbour has dozens of chickens so need to sort myself out in time.

I still have a celery plant from last year growing outside.
I assume it will soon go to seed?
Pity as nothing else close to being ready.

Yesterday.
I have an excess of beef tomatoe plants, so not that bothered if they don't make it.
Nothing in weather forecast (Lincolnshire) suggest they will have problems.
Just remembered hanging baskets went out last week. All sunstripe.

Grow Your Own / Re: Asparagus Watch!

This warm weather seems to have turbo charged my asparagus, took some round to the neighbours as the fridge was filling up.

Same here. Having picked on Thursday evening I was greeted by this sight this morning. I could almost see them growing before my eyes!

General Gardening / Quince tree repot barrel help
« Last post by dougens on Today at 10:53 »
Hi
I have a quince tree in a pot being doing fine for years but never fruited.
I’m repotting on into a much larger whiskey barrel
Barrel is
Top diameter 67cm
Bottom diameter 54cm
Height 48cm
It will positioned on the stone patio

I have a few queries if anyone can help please?

- drilling 4 1” drainage holes in the bottom?
- making up a mix of PF compost / topsoil / perlite / blood and bone / some bark / homemade compost
- should I put it on wheels? I don’t really want to but at the least will put it on raisers to clear underneath?

But will this be moveable without wheels if we need to redo the patio?
It would need a few people.

Anyone any advice / experience please help.

Finally I know repotting late. Will this be an issue?

Thanks all!
