Wine in demi john query
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:22 »
I have 6 demijohns with wine in with the bubble traps in the airing cupboard so only have 2 spare bubble traps. I have more demijohns to start more wine making, but do I need to buy more bubble traps or can I replace the ones in the airing cupboard with something else? I haven't wine bottles to decant into.
Hope this makes sense.

A balloon stretched over the neck makes a very good airlock. I always let wine ferment to the end as I like it strong & dry so I always use balloons instead of solid corks when I "think" a wine has stopped.

Id just buy more air locks - they're cheap as chips.

I agree, always a good idea to have a few spares, you never know when you might break one, (I still have a few from when they were made out of glass, but not many!)
If the wine is finished fermenting and you have nothing to use, then cling film will make a temporary closure, and if they are finished then you need to be racking them off and putting them somewhere cool anyway.

They are remaining in the demijohns as they will not be drunk for some months yet and someone else suggested leaving them so it matures as a whole. Will ask hubby to pop into Wilkinson's down South as my nearest is half an hour away.

If you leave the wine in the airing cupboard with the dead yeast laying on the bottom, you will get some really bad flavours. You will have to pour off the wine to prevent this.
If you look up "racking off" you will understand what I mean.
Good luck with your new hobby.

I bulk store mine in DJ's but i don't do it with airlocks fitted as the water can turn and dry out.

I fit prssure safety caps instead and have red wines (bramble and elderberry) that is over 3 years old and still fine.
