2 prolapse on two girls is there any reason?
« on: August 07, 2010, 17:56 »
Afternoon all,

The OH has just spotted another prolapse but very very small this time, we've separated the girl (happens to be my girl as well!!). Is there any reason why after 2 years we've suddenly started getting prolapses.?

Things that have changed over the last 2 / 3 months:

1. New chicken house (good size and good venterlation)
2. More grass land + plus some shrubs / trees (over 50sq meters for 9 girls)
3. Automatic feeder (seen some of our ex batts using it but none of the other girls but feed going down).
4. Electric fence (cannnot see what this would do)

Only other thing is the automatic time opens the door very early but girls are in bed earlier!

Please help dont want to loose any more since none of the ex batts have had a prolapse and our girls are only about 2 half years old.

Thanks in advance.
Graham = 2x Border collie Dogs, 2x Cats, 1x Wife, 2x Kids, 2x Hamsters and now 10x chickens.

It can happen with age - their eggs get bigger and also her muscles may be weaker through age or large eggs. Just put a little bit of germaloids or similar on it, Push it back in if it hasn't already gone back, put her somewhere dark to deter egg laying for a few days and feed her on mixed corn whilst she is in the dark.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Do they have plenty of grit/calcium to supplement their feed to keep the shell quality up?

They don't need much oyster shell in fact I very rarely see mine eating any out of it's container. The grit is purely for ginding their feed - mine eat their way through the tiny stones on my driveway

being honest the only time they eat mine is to check that no grubs are in it! I might start adding some poultry spice to help.
