hens not laying
« on: June 19, 2011, 09:27 »
i have 3 warrens which i got over 2 years ago and they have constantly layed since day one and right through both winters ( which i read is unusual ) and now all three have stopped laying. i'm thinking they may have come to their natural end of laying but now i'm not sure what i should feed them. I've been feeding layers pellets so far but with the extra calcium not being used for egg production i assume i need to change? any advice would be very helpful. thanks adi

I still feed my old timers in retirement on layers - they can still lay the occasional egg  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Layers pellets aren't good for young chicks because the calcium can build up over time.  But as your hens are at the 'other end' of their lives it's very unlikely there will be a chance for the calcium to build up to harmful levels.

In fact, there is an argument that older hens (like older people) can benefit from extra calcium to keep a healthy bone density in their old age.

Also, when did your hens lay their last eggs?  It's possible they are just taking a break and may get back to full production after a little R & R.

Good on you for looking after your hens during their 'retirement.'  :)

i must admit when i got them it was really just for the eggs but like everyone on here says they are addictive, and soon had names and personalities, now me and my daughter treat them better than ourselves sometimes.
