« on: June 13, 2012, 20:02 »
Hi

I am looking for a plant that only grows between 0 - 4 inches but spreads alot and does not mind alittle bit of shade.

Any help will be much appreciated and thankyou for your time.

I like Campanula portenschlagiana  and Sedum spurium as ground cover in all the awkward places in my garden  ;)

You could also try woodruff (Galium odoratum), doesn't mine shade and also copes with dry shade under trees.

You haven't mentioned whether blooms are important or not fussy.

A good ground cover plant which flowers April/May and early autumn is Veronica Waterperry Blue. It has evegeeen leaves which turn burgundy in winter. A similar creeping plant that blooms May/June with more unusual lilac blooms is Mazus Reptans whose leaves also turn burgundy in winter. These alpine plants need some sun to flower well

If it's just a foliage ground cover you want to eventually cover a area which thrives in deep shade Ajuga Reptans will make a thick green carpet and is commonly used for that purpose. It produces blue flower spikes in spring too. There is also a popular purple variagated version of this. Vinca Minor is another popular ground cover for shade, that also has variagated versions.
