Cockerels!
« on: January 23, 2012, 21:15 »
I have ended up with a cockerel as had my 3 chickens from9wks old, they are now 6  months. He is a lovely chap,no aggression at all but will he change as the weather improves? i don't have much ground and my husband refuses to let them take over the garden! They all seem quite content but will it be better to rehome him now? i don't want him to go but feel must do what is best for him. Any advise much appreciated.

Edited to correct spelling of "cockerel" for search purposes

not all cockerels are aggressive - in fact very few are  :D
I have only had one who was (and 2 guinea fowl) and none of them were raised by me, all mine have been quite calm.
Staffies are softer than you think.

ONly problem might be if he starts crowing a lot. Are you urban or rural? Neighbours might make the decision for you.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Joys right not all cockerels are agressive and if they become so it is not always down to their upbringing.  Some, however, can change once spring has sprung and their hormones get going.  It is a case of wait and see. I would advise though if they do become difficult they can cause a lot of damage and you cannot 'train' it out of them! :(
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I have a very large buff orpinton cockerel (ginger) he is the sweetest bird ever, when I put treats in the pen he always lets his girls eat first and as yet has never been aggressive.

He sleeps in the utility room at night so as not to upset the neighbours, each night I put the large cat traveling box out, he jumps in and is put inside in the morning I put himon the grass and off he goes to find his girls. I know how lucky we are to have him so they are not all bad. I would just wait and see what happens. :) :)
