integrating new chickens to the mixed flock
« on: July 20, 2010, 21:27 »
Hi. Am wanting to start a mixed flock, with different colours, breeds, and a rainbow egg collection at the end of the day!
Was wanting 2 begin with two ex-batt hens, and while they recover, hatch some eggs in an incy, and keep one chicken to remain in the flock, and sell the rest of the hatch at POL. Hopefully carry this on until I get a flock of about 10. Obviously, I would only get chicken breeds that have the reputation of being docile, friendly and suitable for a mixed flock.
Is this possible/easy to do? Is there a best way/wrong way of doing this? Any tricks of the trade or chicken etiquette??
Any advise wanted  :D

never introduce 1 hen at a time if you can help it as they will be bullied too much, always get 2 or 3 then this way they can share the bullying.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Try to keep them apart for a while but being able to see each other then when you do put them together do it at night when it is dark and put them in the coup with the others. Try to have 2 or 3 new ones to put in with the others.
If there is room have several feeders around also drinkers so that there is no fighting for food or water.
Put some buckets on its side so that the girls can escape into when they are being bullied.
Once you have put them all together don,t part them. they will fight and it is horrible to see but they have to sort out the peking order. Get some purple spray so that if they get pecked and it starts to bleed you can cover it with the spray to hide the blood, chickens go for anything that is red.
Hope this helps.
