Purple leg?
« on: June 26, 2010, 13:28 »

I'm new to this so hope I do it right...
I need any advice on purple leg on one of my Rhode Island reds...
First I thought she may have twisted it & it was bruised, but over the last few days its spreading down to her toes?
Both my hens don't seem to be putting on any weight either..
Had them about 8 weeks...
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

I've not heard of purple leg before.  It may be something that you'll have to consult a vet about.

How old are your hens now.  Laying birds are hot very heavy and always seem a bit bony.  Do they eat well and do you give them layers pellets ad lib ?

I got them as point of lay, & had them about 2 months now
They both eat well, never stop... ::)
Just the purple leg that's worrying me...
They get pellets & numerous other foods throughout the day, then mixed corn late afternoon..
They both lay every day, so no problems there, they eat a lot of grass & grubs..
never notice them eating the pellets, but they do in there own time..

not sure about chickens but in humans, in the absence of bruising, a purple leg could indicate a very poor blood supply so suggest having this checked out.

I agree with jhub.

I don't think they will be underweight from what you have said about them :)

Hi Shellzy, how did you get on with your hen and her purple leg.  I have been watching with interest to hear what it is.  Hope she is ok.
