growing a pumpkin!
« on: May 24, 2011, 12:10 »
Hi everyone, I got a pumpkin seed, dont know the type, sorry. He's growing away well, got 5 leaves on him. I keep saying him cos Iv called him Percy! Anyhoo, he's still in a pot at the mo but am unsure how much room he will need. Im growing everything in planters/raised beds that Iv made cos my garden is all low maintenance,ie membrane and chukkies, thats the way we got it with house thanks to elderly gent that had house before us! Your help is much needed! Jx

I grew 2 pumpkin plants last year for the first time, gave them plenty of room to spread, they covered about a quater of the plot by the end  i got about 10 very good medium sized pumpkins of the 2 of them.....

They are normally planted a meter or so apart and will sprawl over a wide area depending on how well fed they are. Some say you can "train" them by getting the growing tip to grow in a spiral to take up less ground.

Just waiting for first early potatoes to be harvested then going to plant my pumpkins in that space
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

i'm far from being an expert but i find the squashes are susceptible to mildew and it never seems to do that much harm to their performance

I'd put them outside and let some fresh air circulate around them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Leave them out all day and put back in at night, until I plant them?

For a week or so, then leave them out all the time.

They need to be hardened off before you plant them outside.
