Germinating wild garlic seed
« on: February 11, 2019, 16:23 »
I have had some seed in a heated propagator at 70F for nearly a month and nothing showing yet.  Is this normal? The seed was only packed last year and the growing medium is Humax multipurpose compost.

I would have thought that was too warm when you consider where it grows naturally, but that's only a guess.

Apparently (gurgle!) wild garlic readily self-seeds in autumn, seedlings appearing the following spring.

That could mean they need a period of cold to trigger germination - despite what it says on the packet if you have any seed left over it might be worth sticking them in the fridge for a week and then re-sowing without additional heat.

I wouldn't abandon the ones you've already sown yet though - have a gentle poke around and see if there is any sign of life (or rotting off. :()
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I'll try the fridge treatment on the rest of the packet
