Strawberries
« on: March 17, 2011, 20:29 »
I have a bed of strawberries, they were planted 3 years ago, they are not looking very good at all and have weeds growing in them and look very sorry for themselves, will they be ok if i just weed, feed and tidy them up a bit, or do i need to remove the old plants, or even move them all altogether?

It's 50-50 what to do with plants this age. You'll still get some harvest but not what newer plants will give. Strawbs have a maximum life of 5 yrs but really, it's closer to 3-4 depending on how they've been cared for and what your soil is like.

Definitely give all existing plants a good weeding and cut back older leaves close to the crown. this should rejuvenate them a bit for this year. This spring I'd also set in new plants somewhere, but a place where the soil is cleared of weeds and well fed. If you want to simply set existing plants to one side, you can do that - just dig a good enough scoop of soil with the roots so they're not too disturbed this year, then refurbish the cleared area for new plants.

All the strawberry beds look a bit sorry for themselves at the mo!
If it were me I'd give them a good weed and feed and think about renewing the bed with  plants from runners in the autumn.
I think it's a bit late for faffing about now, when you want them to fruit in June ;)

a good shot of bfb and a weeding is just what i have done with mine but i did take plenty of runners and have a second bed now.
my neighbour has fantastic strawberry's and she leaves them in 4yrs , crops them down in autum  and feeds them in spring :)

Here's an alternative for this year if you want to add a few to the bed as insurance:
