garden claw confession.
« on: October 19, 2008, 10:41 »
Ages ago, when I first got an allotment, I bought some garden tools off a chap who was giving up.
one of the tools that was included in the price, was a long handled garden claw. Now, I have to confess that I used to sell these things when I was a young laddie working in a garden centre. Having had an old fashioned gardening apprenticeship, I looked at this device as a complete gimmick, and never stopped poking fun at them.
Up until a couple of years ago, I used the one I got in that job lot of tools, as a great place to hang my jacket.
Well my back isn't what it once was, and digging is out of the question, so I thought I'd swallow my pride, dust of this claw thingy, and give it a go.

Wish I'd tried it years ago now, it's perfect for loosening up the soil ( ours is quite light ) I don't have to bend over, and if a neighbour comes over for a chat, I can sit on it like a shooting stick....

I wondered if any of you chaps and chappeses have ever blown raspberries at any garden tool, that you have later changed your mind about........

My old man bought me one as I don't dig as I have a back problem and I can't do the rotation required to dig.  I love it. Good for "fluffing" as I call it.  It doesn't work when the soil's wet though  :D

I bought a cheapo version for £3 out of Wilko's seveal years ago and I love it!  It's good for fluffing, like you said CQ and for getting stuff like ragwort out of the ground

I've been particularly lucky to have heavy clay soil at every house I've lived at   . I bought a type of garden claw thing but this one is a mini roller type on a long handle. Don't even know where the silly thing is as it was totally useless in my heavy soil, something they neglect to mention in all the fancy telly ads. As for the garden claw itself, I'll pass - there's simply too much ground to work with a 'toy'. Give me a solid rotovator and mulch anytime.

I happen to know one or two Americans. I'll see what I can do.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Bought one from B&Q, to do the back garden borders, at the start of last year.

Managed to do them but when I'd finished the head had sheared away from the handle.

Took it back and swapped it for seeds.
