Storing Plums
« on: August 03, 2009, 20:40 »
Evening All,
I have a plum tree which i've had for a year it now has loads of fruit on it, this is the first time i've grown any kind of fruit so i'm not sure if i can pick and store the plums as you can with some veg.
I would really like to harvest it all before the birds etc do.
Will they keep if store them in a cool dry place?
Every gardener needs a good hoe'

They won't store for long and you have to be really careful to make sure there are no damaged ones. The fridge helps to make them last a bit longer but long term storage options are bottling, jamming, chutney, freezing or even if you can be bothered, drying.

You can't beat them fresh though.

Thank you for the information, i had a feeling they wouldn't store to well. I do intend on making jam with them but wanted to be able to keep them until i'm able to use them.

I got a load from my Uncle's tree a couple of years ago.  I halved them, took out the stone and kept them in the freezer.  They made fine jam later on in the year when I needed it and I also used some of them stewed for desserts.

Ah, that's interesting to know...... I have a bag of unstoned plums in my freezer from last year! I'd already stoned loads for the freezer and eaten my fill of fresh ones - this last bag was just one too many, so I shoved it in the freezer whole, as they were starting to go off.

Do you think the plums would taste ok if I put them into a Plum and Walnut Crumble, with an Oat and Cinnamon topping?  Enough other flavours going on there to mask it, or do they really taste that weird??
"Perhaps we could just dig up that bit of lawn......and plant more veg?"

Ha ha!  Will do......

They've got to be used one way or another, as I need to make room for this year's plums!
