Last date for toms from seed?
« on: May 10, 2012, 20:16 »
As per title. I just got some San Marzano seeds and wondered whether it would still produce a decent crop if sown now? Also, are San Marzano cordon or bush and will they be better outside or inb an unheated g/house?

I wouldn't try to grow SM from a late sowing. They are always the last of my toms to ripen and that's from a March sowing, and they are cordon and I grow them in the g/house.
I'd save the seed for next year  :)

My San Marzano are still only 3 - 4" high so if you plant and supply a bit of bottom heat, you should catch up.  But I wished you hadn't asked if they were cordon or bush,  I chucked the packet away

Someone is BOUND to tell us   Cordon, told ya' so.

Mine will be in an unheated greenhouse.

Cheers,    Tony.

Mine too and my G' Delight are not much bigger and were sown a month earlier.
1st time trying SM, so I'll see how they go!

I did San Marzano last year, doing them again this year. All my bush toms planted outside last year were pants because of the foul weather, but the San Marzano on my patio in pots did fantastically well, gave me a huge crop of beautiful big toms.

So did you do them outside as bush toms then?

Not San Marzano, no, I grew those as cordons in pots on the patio. I think they're supposed to be semi-determinate, but they did fine as cordons. I did have 3 other varieties of bush tomato that I grew outside in beds, and those did very badly last year because of the bad weather.

Weird. I grew Gardeners Delight as a bush outside last year and they did really well. I also did, wait for it, a moneymaker as a bush and it cropped really well, albeit smaller fruit than normal.
