Will this kill the bulbs?
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:58 »
I want to re-plant our school pots for a nice summer display.  The spring bulb foliage is still green and needs to die down, but will soon look a mess. Can I replant them now and not lose them? (and if I cut the foliage down will I spoil next years' flowers as I'm told?) I have no budget to buy big new pots.
Also, any suggestions for really good doers for a display which will last til end July. Drought tolerant is good! (I've got some little red/white/blue petunias coming along).

Thank you!

Fisher :)

Have you room in an out of way place to heel them in complete with foliage, minus faded flowers. Give them a sprinkle of blood, fish & bone.
A woman's place is in her garden.

If you cut the foliage you won't get any more flowers, cos it's the foliage that feeds the bulbs up again ready for next year.

Well thank you Snowdrops and MoS .
I had to bite the bullet yesday, and turf them out. I had a word with a lady at my local 'garden and cheap other stuff' place, and she said they'd be ok to dry off out of the soil.  So at the moment they're in the cool greenhouse.

I plant my bulbs in old blue plastic mushroom boxes collected for free from the greengrocer.Bury the basket in the ground and when the bulbs finish flowering lift the basket and place somewhere out of the way till next year.
