[plum crumble]

any recommendations for 2012 compost specifically for seeds? I have had disasters in the past and need a good start this year

Hi Plum, I used to use B&Q multi purpose, but after being given some last year and having great results from it I now use John Innes no.1

I am doing the same, but I think it is from last years stock as it is still 75litre bags!  I can't guarantee the 70 litres are the same.

Also I was advised from the guy at our usual nursery, really good place, very knowledgeable growers, to use Levingtons F1 which is sold in 70 litre bags and which, he said, are used by all the plant growers in the trade.

Haven't yet tried it but will as soon as I run out of the Wickes.

If it is rubbish after I buy it I have told him I will take it back and throw it at him.

I tried it (Levingtons) the year before last and wouldn't go back to it - it stays very wet, ok for tomatoes and pots I suppose but not good for seed sowing IMO

well ive been usinga levingtons growbag contents for sowing and the majority of things that i have sown in it have come up!

Was that the Levingtons F1?

If so I won't risk it.

Maybe it is a sign of growing older but I get fed up with manufacturers changing things for the worse and telling us that they have improved it!

I bought a small bag from Wilkos - can't remember the brand but it was cheap and is nice and fine, results so far so good.

B&Q 125 litres working fine for me, tried a few in the past, all seemed ok, but B&Q seemed best price/litre.

"John Innes" is a formulation, not a brand.
