When to plant Hellebores
« on: September 15, 2011, 10:25 »
I've ordered some hellebores online and have been told they'll be despatched in November, I would have thought the ground would be too cold and possibly wet then for them to be successful what do you think? (I had a look on RHS website but couldn't find the answer) Thanks as always, Jude.

Hellebores are super hardy and if they're already potted, they can go in anytime. Even if they're bare-rooted, you can still plant them. They do like some water and won't  mind rain. If you feel your planting area is too soggy, then plant them in a slightly raised mound so that excess water runs off and won't rot roots.

If you're worried about the planting holes freezing, simply place some cardboard or scrap pieces of plywood over the chosen areas. This will keep out frost for quite a while and the soil will still be soft for planting.

Trillium is spot-on. A little touch of bone meal to help the roots take might not go amiss. I heard they don't like being moved but I have lots of them and have moved with success. Being in Warwickshire, you won't get it as cold as we do up here (theoretically) though I am about half a mile from the sea as the plants fly!!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Personally, I would put them in pots if the ground is hard and cold but they are hardy so the others are probably right.   :)
