Primrose and Polyanthus ?
« on: April 17, 2011, 17:04 »
I've always called polyanthus primroses for some reason but am I right in thinking that Primroses are different and they only come in yellow and seen a lot in woodlands and the wild ?

I think Polyanthus produce their flowers in bunches on top of a tallish stem whereas primroses produce lots of small stems with one flower on. I may stand corrected as the family name Primula covers primroses but also the drumstick type with a single tallish stem, yet still one flower on top.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

For some reason or other our polyanthus have been outstanding this year - plastered with flower after flower. Best year ever.

I wonder if it was the cold / long winter that influenced their blooming success?

Cultivated primroses come in several colours as far as I know.

Oh I know ours have also been amazing come Spring they were really superb, so I thought of taking seed from them, its very easy to do great instructions in Carol Kleins Propogation book.

Polyanthus grow easily from seed, and I managed to get a window box filled with some gorgeous cream ones. The bees love them

The seeds I got were free with something I got from Fothergills and were called Fresh Cream I think, or something similar. Absolutely beautiful  :)
