Only 2 eggs viable :(
« on: December 31, 2010, 12:41 »
Just candled the eggs in my shiny new incubator and only two are viable  :(

Still two is better than none eh!  We shall see what happens over the next 11 days or so.

I presume its the cold weather that effects the cockerals performance this time of year?

Not necessarily the birds and not automatically the bator!!!   Could be either.... what you need is to find someone trustworthy who will supply you with tested eggs that they are hatching at the moment and getting good results from.

I have serama and pekin which I am busy incubating (not for sale at moment just incase I get my knuckles rapped) and getting mostly fertile eggs.... out of the last 50 set there have only been 3 non fertile :)

So you need to start with the real deal first.....
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

all through winter we have been getting about 80% fertility in the eggs we have eaten.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If im honest I dont know the woman I bought the eggs from but it would seem they have only ever had them under a broody this summer.

The incubator is sound as I bought it from a good friend but hey ho its mid a harsh winter so not to worry!

We shall see what happens with them and of course there will be updates!!

Hatch day is the 10th Jan Joy.  Do you tend to increase the humidity a couple of days before?  Ive heard conflicting theories of course!!

sorry have never incubated so can't help - I always use a broody hen (and sadly in summer that means about half my girls go broody and off lay  :().
