Vaseline
« on: December 20, 2010, 16:03 »
Hi All,
Can anybody tell me how often to apply Vaseline to the chickens wattles?
I did it for the first time today and one complained a bit but the other seemed to really enjoy it!

Not sure how often and it will depend on how long this freezing weather lasts. I did mine a few weeks ago so they might need a top up. Be very, very gentle as their red bits are very delicate. Mine actually liked it

Oh perhaps I was a bit rough with the one that complained then!

My girls are quite noisy when I first pick them up but once they're settled nicely under my arm they're fine. You have to speak cluckingly as well whilst gently rubbing in the Vaseline.  If they have  bad experience they won't let you catch em next time  :)

I applied it to some of my birds yesterday as I'd heard it can help combat frostbite, but I wonder if I was a bit late with one of them. The tips of 3 of the comb points have gone a brownish colour, rather than the red of the rest of it but he/she (long story...) didn't seem to mind me rubbing the vaseline on. Is there any way of recognising if it is frostbite and, if it is, will the tips drop off?

The tips of a couple of comb points in my 2 were a brown/black colour when I got them in April this year so I guess they picked up a bit of frostbite in the very cold conditions early this year. The tips are still there though & haven't dropped off :)

I re-applied Vaseline to my hens this morning just after I'd let them out.  They got a bowl of warm porridge for being good  :)
