Purple sprouting broccoli
« on: October 10, 2010, 10:06 »
We planted some between June and July, it's grown really tall and bushy but hasn't sprouted.  I wonder if we should give up on it, pull it up and get the ground ready for something else...  (By the way, my mrs has just realised it's 10am on 10/10/10!!)  :tongue2:

It's very probably one for spring harvesting. Just leave it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Same question for my PSB - however the packet definitely and specifically says it's for autumn harvesting (July-Nov). Just leave and cross fingers? Leave over winter and hope it grows spears in spring??

There are supposedly 2 types of psb; one early, one late.
I say supposedly because in my experience they both start producing sprouts in the New Year, but maybe one is a bit earlier.
Don't rip them up!! Even if they don't produce sprouts (they will.....every plant needs to reproduce) the greens are FANTASTIC.
Last year mine were eaten by slugs, then caterpillars and then pigeons just before flowering so I ripped them up in frustration and regretted it afterwards because they'll regrow even if there's only a stalk left!
Needless to say, I have debris netted this year and apart from me picking and the dratted flea beetle I've got some lovely plants for sprouts next year. (Fingers crossed!)

In my experience PSB can look increasingly miserable throughout the winter then make a wonderful resurgence in the spring.  Unless you urgently need to plant something else on the same ground, just leave it be.
