Potaotes from seed pods
« on: July 12, 2010, 13:12 »
Hi all,

Thaks to peapod I now know that I have seed pods developing on my potatoes. Is it possible to use these for growing potatoes next year? If so, how do I go about it?

I know there's probably a lot of hassle involved but I hate things going to waste!

Anybody any ideas?

It's much more fun using 'tattie apples' as ammunition in a catapult.

Lmao, i musta had a right boring childhood, i've never heard of them.  My sister in law was asking me about some wine I have in a demijon and I told her it was rosehip, she asked what they were and laughed when I told her............ she says ahhhhhh 'itchy coos', they put them down each others shirts lol.

Just taken loads off to save the plant using energy there -- might think about trying to grow some tuberlets next year.

Sounds interesting. If any grow on the Mayan Golds though, I might give it a go this year  :D

Cazzy, we used to do that with rose hips. Squash the seeds and pith out of the berry...boy, does it itch and we didn't just put them down each others shirts  ;)

Growing up in the country in the  1950s was a fantastic experience

I missed out on soooo much lol

Well i've been reading up quite a bit on growing from True Potato Seed (TPS)  It sounds fairly simple and I'm gonna give it a try.

I will take most of the tattie apples off the plants this week but will leave one or two that i will use for planting.

As far as I can tell each 'apple' has up to 200+ seeds so won't need many.

Anyone tried this before?

We need Iain JBA to answer that (where is he these days?)

Wont the seed be a potential hybrid of other strains that might have cross pollinated??
Oooh.... can first earlies cross with maincrop? I wish I could have Kerr Pinks that arrive quicker!! lol

yeah, as far as I understand it, each seed will produce a brand new variety of spud.

You can cross them yourself but I don't know how involved that would be...... i'll start off by leaving it up to mother nature and see what I get, i'll pick the tastiest of those and use them as my following years seed potatoes.

Its all very exciting  :D
