PAK CHOI
« on: April 28, 2010, 20:41 »
Hi all, i've not grown Pak Choi before and have been really please with the germination, i have potted the seedlings on with great success, and i am looking to plant out in a raised bed, however i am not sure on what the Pak choi can withstand outside.
Is it frost resistant?
Do birds like it? and what about slugs? any help would be great thanks .

I've grown it recently and I think it's fairly frost hardy.  However, I found that sparrows liked the young leaves and slugs just liked everything.   ::)

Pick it young and pick it often as it's quite difficult to prevent them from bolting.
Cheese makes everything better.

I don't sow Pak Choi until mid-Summer otherwise I find it bolts.

I agree with Kristen, a few of mine bolted last year and I sowed in May, I think.

I grew some BIGUGV (before I gave up growin veg) and was advised to sew them late summer as it got cooler to avoid bolting and harvest them over the autumn and winter. Sadly I didn't get the chance to test this theory as the slugs and cabbage whites got there first! Good luck

I have Pak Choi growing in my greenhouse and two varieties in my garden.

The seedlings in the garden have been doing well with no frost protection though I may give them some cover this week during the cold snap just to be on the safe side.

I keep it going constantly in the green house. I prefer to pick mine young and simply keep the crate I use planted in stages.

Its one of our favorite greens, is a quick grower and considered a garden essential.

Real Seeds has a yellow Pak Choi that I'm experimenting with that is doing very well so far.

Good luck and keep experimenting. Its a rather fabulous vegetable.

Mine was sown outdoors a few weeks ago, and the very cold weather didn't seem to cause any problem. I read somewhere that raising it indoors before planting out helps reduce (but not eliminate) the chances of bolting. You still need to harden it off though...

Pak Choy seems to be more dalylight oriented - the longer the daylight, the more quickly it will bolt. It's definitely a cold hardy crop, one you can plant in late fall for early spring greens. Once it get a bit warm, nothing stops it from bolting. Seeding in April or May is just too late to get much crop even if the pests didn't beat you to it.
