wing cllipping
« on: February 20, 2010, 18:53 »
Evening all

I was thinking about getting my 4 girls wings clipped. Is it something that I can do myself or get it done professionally. Also is it best to get just one wing clipped or both of them? If both were done how high would they still be able to get up to?

Many thanks

Alex

FM, if you want to curtail their flying clip the primary feathers of just one wing. This will unbalance them.
You don't need to have it done professionally, you just need a steady hand, a sharp pair of scissors and someone else to hold your chook still.

Have a look at this thread, there is a good piccy :)

You could also cut each feather individually and close the the second set of feathers and leave the first feather unclipped for a neater look.

yes remember to make sure they have no launch platform as they will still be able to sort of fly over a fence
Staffies are softer than you think.

To be fair I knew someone who used to keep ducks.  I believe the best course of action is to clip one wing so they are unbalanced when they try to fly.  By clipping both you sort of cancel out the effect!

correct and then after their moult clip the other side otherwise they build up bigger muscles on one side only. Clipping wings doesn't always stop them flying anything that they can launch themselves off they will
