Cardboard microwave dishes
« on: February 04, 2010, 13:40 »
Hi all :)
Anyone know where i can buy those cardboardy disposable dishes that go in the microwave?
I often batch cook and freeze in single servings-BH won't eat anything with pasta, tomato sauce, aubergine etc  ::)
I don't care for the plastic dishes as they crack in the freezer and I'm not 100% sure of their safety in the micro.
Thanks for any help!  :D

Welcome to the site mooncatsmum  :D

Sorry I don't know anything about the cardboard dishes, never seen them.

I'm surprised that your plastic dishes crack in the freezer though.  I've got the ones from the pound shop and they cope OK in there.

What I do with my single portions of batch cooked casseroles, is take them from the freezer and put them in the microwave for only a couple of minutes max.  This is enough to make the lids pliable again, without heating them or the meal too much.  I then decant the stew into a saucepan and reheat it from there.  Tastes good and haven't given myself food poisoning despite years of practice!

If you can't find what you're after, perhaps this strategy could be a compromise between cooking in the plastic and breaking it with the cold.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have a placcie ones and use them all the time, freezer to microwave.
I get a cracked one now and again, but they only cost a £1 for 6, so I think I'll stick with those :)

I cook in bulk and freeze portions of soup casseroles etc and fruit as it ripens all in those plastic boxes like takeaway's come in  (so my friends tell me ::)) and same friend gets them for me in Macro 50 at a time.

I find they last maybe 10 uses before the plastic breaks but Yorkie is right you have to soften the lid before opening to prevent cracking, just leave on worktop for 20 mins before opening.
