I'm liking this idea a lot. In fact, I think I have some chicken wire somewhere and I can rig up some kind of hammocky thing across up by the roof of the shed -- at least I'll be able to wriggle in under neath it that way. Better than trying to avoid treading on the onions

Thanks, Bailey  :D

if using the keepenet i have had to attach string to each hoop of the net! just so it keeps it level as such and the onions dont roll all into the middle of the net!!

That all sounds very professional! lol! Love the wire idea!

but....we've just pulled ours up, tied them in bunches and then hung those bunches up?? Would that cause us problems?? should I take them down and go with the vertical wire idea??

Bunches are OK IMHO, just depends how many onions you are dealing with

less than a hundred in total? hanging them up in bunches of about 20? then popping them into a hessian sack or plaits?

Hmmm bear in mind I'm no expert (hence I asked the question in the first place  ) but 20 seems like very big bunches, and the ones on the inside have to dry out too.

There are a few around who grown masses of onions every years, so hopefully someone will come to the rescue over this one.

Don'y take 'em down yet, mind  :D

Last year because the weather was so bad, I pegged them to the clothes drying rack for a couple of days.  It did a lovely job and once they were dry I pleated the stems, hung them in the kitchen and used them all by January without a single one going bad.

I pulled mine yesterday and they are now sitting on chicken wire on my garden table protected by a huge umbrella.  (Cant remember when we last used it for a bbq)  They came up very muddy and I was wondering whether to brush it off or leave it.

You know onions have stopped growing when the tops start turning brown, not when they`ve fallen over. If they are still green, they are still growing. :D

Hi, you may have seen that my winter onions were stolen!! If I was to lift my summer ones and let them dry on the ground I'm sure I wouldn't have any left when I go to pick them up!!
As to when they are ready..... my ones have the green stalk still but fallen over, worried about leaving them incase they get nicked!! but they are not ready yet. It's so annoying to have to worry about if your onions are there or not when you go to get them!
