Nettles?
« on: June 17, 2009, 21:40 »
I am very keen on the idea of forraging, I love using wild garlic i nthe early spring, I always make elderflower cordial, and plum and blackberry jam, but spurred on by Ds who is fascinated by the idea of being able to eat stingers I am really keen on doing this.

So has anyone done it?? from what I gather I need good gloves? leather or will rubber do? rubber doesn't resist comfrey IME are nettles softer!
I should only harvest the top 4 inches from each stem, wash very well and the boil, I think I will make a blended soup so Ds is more likely to go with it.

So please do share your experiences/ recipes

If you click on the 'search' linky above, enter 'nettle' in the search box and restrict the search forums to Cooking etc, you'll get just under 10 threads which may well have useful info in them.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

louby, I used the River cottage recipe and I found it by "googling" River Cottage Nettle Soup and it was the first thing that came up.

I really liked it but only use the top few leaves, it's a bit late in the season really. If you cut down some nettles and then pick the regrowth that should work :D

Don't know  ::)

Here are the selective results of the Yorkie jury  :lol: (Mind you I haven't checked them thoroughly for content, but they look more like recipes than practical tips)

I make nettle soup evey year, its delicious.

One tip, nettle soup needs to be seasoned well with salt. Also, I find the soup tastes better on the second day.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Nettles can be cooked like spinach. They are nice sauteed with garlic and a bit of butter or blended in soups. Just remember to pick the nettle tops which are out of reach of dogs, small boys or grown men !
