Jenny B's right. The problem is that people have got 'educated' to the bland tastless stuff from the supermarkets.

At least it the right shape though.

I'll drink to that. Supermarkets are a blot on the landscape

Jenny b hit it right on the head, people just dislike anything than the bland mush that they are custom to. People are really surprised at the taste of my chickens free range eggs for instance and my lettuce.

We pulled up our carrots last weekend and had them with our dinner. They definitely tasted stronger than supermarket ones which dont really taste of anything anyway. They went down a treat and we all loved them along with the freshly dug up pink fir apple. In fact they went down so well we went out and bought some half price carrot seeds in the hope we can get a fresh crop before it's too late this year.

would you believe I got them from Julian Graves (of all places). They had a rotating stand with all kinds of good stuff on it and were half price to boot :D

we got the "rainbow mix"?? carrots and windsor dwarf broad beans from there.

good ol' Wilkos is ok for some seeds - try the tomato variety pack - 6 different lots in one collection (minature plum, yellow [golden sunrise], and some sort of stripey sort as well).

best wishes

Johnny

WOW.....  I can't believe that people complained about the taste.

I wonder what they will think when they eat your home grown tomatoes,if you've grown any, because as far as I'm concerned supermarket carrots and toms can't compare with home grown.

Tomatoes will be fine, cos I've grown them before without complaints
Same with beans, lettuces, leeks, parsnips, cabbages etc.
Just the carrots - which is why I wondered what I'd done wrong!
Well they'll have to get used to them, cos there's lots more left yet
Going to try some out on Gerty guinea pig tomorrow. If she turns her nose up then I really will worry!

tell them its what REAL carrots taste like!

probably a bit like peas too?  the fresher they are the better the flavour.

i know my sugar snaps taste far sweeter than those from shops and after watching jimmy's farming heroes, those who grow the peas to be frozen have a 2 hour time frame i think it was - certainly no more than that to have them frozen by after harvest to keep the sweetest.

We've just harvested our first carrots from the lottie. The taste was wonderfully carroty and were enjoyed by the OH and the children. Only wish we had cleared enough space to grow more....

It's a shame your hard work was wasted...

It wasn't wasted, cortina    Gerty guinea pig loved em, tops and all, and today I got some kiddies over to join me in harvesting the rest.
Quick swill under the tap and they LOVED them, had to put my babies out of reach in the end, so I'd have enough to freeze!
I grated the larger ones to go in soups and shepherds pies, and left the baby ones whole.
Tomorrow I'm going to sow more :D
Thanks everyone, for the unanimous verdict - homegrown is best, and shame on those who prefer stale supermarket ones which have flown to Poland and back
