HELP!! I am an idiot
« on: May 02, 2008, 14:11 »
Hi everyone.

Planted some potatoes a while back in large canvas spring up garden thingies(see told ya i was an idiot!) very excited to see leaves, however good old Carol Klein says in her book to cover with soil as they grow? Do i need to do that, seems like i will be using loads of soil, or do i just leave the plants to do whatever they do?

Apparently covering them with soil, as the green leaves develop ,helps to stop the spuds just underneath from going green. That makes them poisonous.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago

yeah cover them up with soil or homemade compost, spent compost, old growbag compost, any compost you can find, or straw. Protects from frost as well as preventing the spuds from going green  :D

No matter how deep you plant your spuds, they like to grow their tubers at and above surface level. As  a member of the deadly nightshade family (name should say it all), the tubers, when exposed to light, turn green and poisonous at all green areas. Like the others say, it's mandatory to somehow cover up the tubers before they surface. Whatever mulch you use, be sure its thick.
