Use-by dates - again...
« on: October 24, 2023, 18:27 »
This must be a record...

Elder Daught bought us - via Amazon - a bread machine for our birthdays, and I'm having tremendous fun playing with it, (may be a separate post about this, I've got a lot to learn), but as I wanted to make a cake today, I scoured the shelves for the various spices, vanilla etc...

How's about this then...'Baking powder' - Tesco - June 2013!

AND - 'Mixed spice' - Sainsbury's - January 2003!

So I was around fifty-four when we bought the spice in the Hastings store!

...Er, how time flies..;0~

Err, perhaps you need to give your pantry a little more attention

They were on the top shelf, behind all sorts of jars and bottles, lurking away from the daylight!

But looking at all the spice and herb bottles, well, how many jars of oregano does one really need? Will five jars of mixed herbs see me out?

For goodness sake don't tell my daughter - she'll be round here with a skip...

Growster, such a huge relief to know my cupboards are not on their own.  Can I swop some turmeric(6 jars!!?) for some mixed herbs?

Ah, yet again I'm having another sort out. This time it's the kitchen cupboards where there is a wealth of produce to be gone through. Cue my niece-in-law (God bless her) who'll get them out from the upper ones and I'll get them out of the lower ones and I'll be in Scotland before her!  Sorry, just me having a silly moment thinking of what on earth is she going to do with three canisters of vanilla pods, a jar of truffle mayonnaise, a Use by March 2022 small Festive pudding, and a large jar of anchovy fillets in olive oil??
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

GG, our cat Marshal says he'll take the large jar of anchovies, but only if you offer free shipping like Amazon, because he is currently unemployed.

My wife thinks I have a too relaxed view of use by dates!!
I ignore dates on tins but I do note use by dates on dodgy things like milk etc.
Also I am wary of meat dates which can be wrong. I have opened packs of chicken before now which were ostensibly in date but stank to high heaven and were obviously unfit to eat. The risk these days is that some people treat the dates as sacrosanct and don’t engage their brains.
