Min temperature for squash/cucumber
« on: April 28, 2018, 13:15 »
Can anyone tell me the minimum temperature needed for squash and cucumber seedlings to survive. I am running out of space indoors!

The greenhouse has a little electric heater which is set for a minimum of 8 degrees at the moment.
Will this be warm enough or should I turn up the temperature?

I do appreciate that whatever I do will be a good excuse for the cucumbers to keel over

Thanks
Elaine

These plants are programmed to die at any moment, Elaine..:0(

I'm in the same boat, and may just pop them out, under some clear plastic and pray for heat and no draughts - the temperature is not always the most important issue, light is needed as well.

We keep the greenhouse frost-free, and in the past, this has always worked, so - at the risk of being beaten over the head, I'd say put them out and under some safe clear protection. They do need to toughen up.

Thanks Growster, I may well rig up a little extra protection out there. Unfortunately there will always be a small draught as the wire for the heater comes through the vents.

Problem is the greenhouse is getting a little crowded too - I even had to bring in the sunflowers as it was heavy rain and windy. They are for my grandson so cannot afford to take any risks

I've got small very small tomato plants, chillis and sweet peppers outside in a cold frame. No room inside.

Tonight's forecasts suggest down to 5-7 degrees C.

Are they going to survive the night?

They'll be fine, I've had mine out in the polytunnel since the start of April and the temps have hit 4.5c in there at night with no issues. If you're worried though, give them a layer of fleece on top just help them a bit, but personally I don't like to mollycoddle my plants too much.

Mine are still indoors as the forecast here is too low (on the fringe of frost) and they are all too big to fleece well.
