Tayberries ...
« on: January 21, 2008, 15:58 »
... I've got a ridiculous instruction on my tayberry.  It should not be grown within 30 feet ... yes 30 feet!! ... of a raspberry or a hybrid blackberry.

No rhyme nor reason is given.  I can stick them 30 feet from my raspberries and blackberries no problem, but it'll be less than that from the three adjoining plots, which seems a bit unneighbourly.  And as sure as eggs are eggs is this is bad allotment behaviour yer man next door wll have my giblets for stock!

Why on earth would that be?  Cross pollination surely isn't an issue.  Who propagates fruit trees from seeds in the allotment world??

.... might have something to do with them growing 10 feet or more?  Perhaps their roots are invasive and kill off competition although 30 feet is a bit overkill?

This probably has absolutely nothing to do with this and is sheer coincidence, but where I put my tayberries & loganberries close by the privet hedge in my garden, the hedge is actually dying there (dry crispy branches and no new growth)  I haven't figured that out yet but one is starting to wonder now ...? :?

I hope somebody explains - because I have ordered one and I think I may have to plant it on someone else's plot  :!:

I had a tayberry plant and the only space left for it was with the red currants, just south of the raspberries. I didn't notice any problems with it other than yes, it grows tall and has deadly thorns. There were no apparent cross pollination problems. Perhaps the roots are larger for such a tall plant. Some pruning would take care of height. My tayberry didn't seem to sucker either. If anything, I'd just give them a bit more spacing from your raspberries for roots. Tayberries are a cross between raspberries and I believe loganberries.

My fruit book just says 8 foot between them nothing about how near it is to another one.
My new one is a lot less than 30ft from raspberries but I it has only been there a little while.

:?  :? Wellie.

We had a similar question in the past. No other reason I can think of than already offered: competition and build up of disease and pests easier in close proximity.

On the other hand everybody grows their fruit grouped together somewhat for practical reasons of maintainance, etc.

It is self-fertile and I cannot see why it would be any worse than its parents which the other two guys are, I believe.

Just plant up with common sense. Needs good support and a lot of space.
