My lottie neighbour has asparagus but doesn't harvest it ever - just lets it get ferny and die back  :(

If I ask him nicely and he agrees, how difficult is it / how should I  lift the crowns and replant?  Is it as easy as following the steps above or are there more rules to follow for already established plants (try not to damage the roots is a given)

I have just been looking for some crowns to start a new asparagus bed and noticed that Abbey Parks Asparagus Farm are selling them for £1 each including P&P.  Might be worth a look.

That seems to be about the going rate around a pound per plant, Sadgit.

Also bought good crowns from these guys in the past.

Where is the best place to buy Asparagus? Looking for about 20 crowns and does anywhere actually sell 2 year crowns or just 1 year?

Really meant to get some last year and totally forgot.. oops :)

Gossip I heard in the mean time says that crowns marketed as 2 year olds will be weak crowns from previous year, grown on to a marketable size.
So will make weaker plants.

Donno if it's true.

Just follow my previous directions for weedy asparagus and you should do okay. Allow as much soil for the bigger asp. roots as possible and you'll have the best success.  The less damage you do to the roots, the happier they'll be.
Convince your neighbour how much extra gardening space he'll have if he gives you the asparagus

Oh no, I bought the Woolworth ones and thought I made a great bargain and now they're very spindly and tiny looking compared to the ebay ones :(

i am planting some 1 year crowns this year too.  Do you think i can plant them through some weed fabric to keep weeds down with a circle cut in fabric around the plant so more water can get in and i can feed with mulch/manure?
