Planting squash and pumpkins on a slope.
« on: June 10, 2014, 20:13 »
I am running out of planting space that's not in the shade.  I could plant them at the top of a steep slope (mostly about 45 degrees).  Is this going to cause problems supporting the pumpkins?

Hmm that's interesting, you would not want a 26 stone pumpkin rolling down the hill at you  :D

That's a very steep slope but I am sure they would support themselves or you could put some stakes either side of any pumpkins and some netting to support them.

My patch has a slight slope, so I've just positioned my squashes closer to the bottom, as that's where all the water and nutrients run to. Helps if we get a dry spell, so no problem at the moment...

From what I've heard, pumpkin stems are surprisingly strong and they'll happily hang in mid air without any help.

I'm not sure if that applies to Atlantic Giant and the like...

You still need the structure to hang from... or do you have sky hooks for them..  :)
