levelling raised beds
« on: February 20, 2014, 18:23 »
I've made the frame for raised beds, but now I am trying to level them.  I'm not OCD about it, the plants won't know the difference if it isn't straight, but I know it would annoy me every time I looked at them if they are wonky.
I've been round and round and when I level one end it upsets another end.  There must be an easy way of doing it? Can anybody let me into the secret?

is it the ground it on or the timber itself? maybe you could add some small 2x2 posts in the corners to raise it up enough to get it level. :)

Are all the cuts square? if not it may pay off.

Hope this helps

Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

Could be a bit of both  :nowink: The ground is very uneven, I think it might be a matter of digging under the high end and moving the soil to the low end.  I was hoping there might be an easier way  :( but I think that is wishful thinking!

I dug mine in to level them up a bit.  I did the best I could and with any gaps I placed roofing slates and rosemary tiles we had lying about, or you could use flat stones.  If you put them on the inside edge they get covered over with your bed filling material.  I think I posted some pics here somewhere :)

That's probably what I will be doing  :nowink: I just wanted to wave a magic wand and it would be done  :) I have lots of bottles I can use to fill gaps and support corners.  I'll feel better in the morning when I've had a night's rest  ;)

When you do these jobs on your own you have to improvise. I was busily improvising with lovely rosemary clay tiles when my husband came home and caught me and confiscated them   :D  Aw miserable rotter!  He'd bought them specially for fixing to the front elevation of the house. Well, he should have said!

I used a length of damproof membrane too to plug one gap. It's black and you can't see if from the outside. If it will hold soil/compo/manure etc it'll be fine.  Do think about drainage though

I've got another smaller raised bed now but I've not put that in place yet. That's still to do, weather permitting.  It should be easier to level that one up hopefully.

Enjoy yourself!  :)

I have done it as well as I can.  They are straight-ish,

well as straight as anything else on the plot!

Why, thank you all  , I was lucky enough to get a good plot (if a little wet at times) so I haven't had to work too hard at getting it right.

If it's a bit wet at times, and has nothing to do with our recent monsoons, try forking in some sharp sand and grit in the bottom to help with drainage. Good luck!
