Where to buy spring Wheat seeds for planting?
« on: May 07, 2013, 22:57 »
Hello again,

As I've got a little land left over, I planned to dedicate some area to grow wheat and hopefully successfully mill and bake into bread, doing the whole process. However, I can't seem to find any UK company that is selling spring wheat seeds from the UK! I've serious searched google and can't find anything! Does anyone have any websites that they know of?

Thanks

If you go there you will be given a cuppa and be well looked after. It is an addictive place and you will find all sorts there that you never knew you'd need  :D

You do realize that you will need quite a large bed of wheat to make enough flour for a loaf or two..

So lets work out some figures for you..  You need say 500g flour for one loaf..

So....
1 acre = 70 yards x 70 yards
1 acre = 44100 sq feet
1 acre = 1.1 million wheat plants @ 25 plants per sq foot.
1 acre average = yields 2900 kg of wheat = 5800 loaves of bread per acre..

Whick means you will need 7.6 sq feet = 190 wheat plants for your one loaf.. Not so big a patch required after all!! And if your crop is below average you will need more for you loaf..

Good luck and enjoy your trial. It's great to try these things.. well done.

Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I bought some organic wheat berries (seeds) from a local bulk food supplier who primarily sells locally grown foods. I know there's no chemicals on the seeds nor growth retardant on them. If they're red winter wheat, they should have been planted last fall. Spring wheat can be planted now.

Yes, my area that I've allocated for wheat is 2.5m x 2m which is a lot more than 7sq feet, still though I'm not sure it'll be enough. Might have to plant a tad densely and hope for the best. Yes I went down there today, they were very friendly and had a wide variety of seeds. Everything that I'm planting this year is in pots or already in the ground, but next year I'll most certainly have a closer look at their catalogue!
